Tory Burch was born and raised in Philadelphia. She attended the University of Pennsylvania and after graduating, moved to New York City to explore the opportunities awaiting an aspiring fashion designer like her. She was fortunate to get the chance of working with different fashion designers such as the Yugoslavian Zoran. She also worked for Polo Ralph Lauren as a copywriter and also provided her services to Vera Wang and Narciso Rodriguez.
In February 2004, she started her own label, using her own name. Her label began as a simple business operation in her apartment and then quickly transformed into boutiques. She opened a flagship store in Manhattan, New York City and all the stocks were almost sold out on the first official day of business. Her line also immediately received recognition and success, and was endorsed by popular celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey.
Currently, Tory Burch (the label) has 36 store branches that are strategically situated in different states and cities in the United States. Some Tory Burch clothing lines are also sold in a number of upscale department stores.
Tory Burch’s label is known for producing and distributing clothes, shoes, bags and accessories that follow the preppy-bohemian and preppy-boho styles. Tory Burch is known for its comfortable and easy to wear style and the versatility of the designs that cater well to people of varying ages, professions and economic statuses.
In 2008, Tory Burch’s authority in the fashion industry has been validated when the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) recognized and awarded her the Accessories Designer of the Year title.
Besides being a renowned fashion designer, Tory is also recognized for her philanthropic activities. In 2008, she founded the Tory Burch Foundation that provides livelihood opportunities for women and families.
